Common questions.
Practical answers before you open a file.
What is an MBOX file?
An MBOX file stores email messages together in one file. You may have one from Google Takeout, Thunderbird or Apple Mail. Open the extracted .mbox file here, rather than its surrounding ZIP archive.
Do I need an account or a Gmail connection?
No account is needed. Choose an MBOX file already on your computer; the viewer does not connect to Gmail or ask for your email password. If your mail is still in Gmail, follow the Google Takeout guide to export it first.
Do my emails leave this computer?
No. Your emails and attachments stay on your device. The viewer shows email text without loading remote images or running email scripts. Closing or reloading the page clears the workspace.
What can I download?
Download an individual attachment, export an email list to CSV, or select attachments and download one ZIP with attachment files and a readable index linking each file to its source message. You can also include the source emails as .eml files. See what is inside the download.
Can I export my email list to Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Choose Export email list to download a CSV with one row per matching email, including emails without attachments. It contains subjects, senders, recipients, dates and attachment details, but no message bodies. See the MBOX to CSV tool. Attachment ZIPs also include a separate index.csv listing the exported files and their source emails.
Can I convert my emails to PDF or PST?
PDF and PST conversion are not available in this version. You can read messages, download selected attachments and include their source emails in your ZIP.
Can I import my archive into Thunderbird?
Yes, a compatible MBOX archive can be imported into Thunderbird’s Local Folders with the ImportExportTools NG add-on. Follow our Thunderbird import guide for the steps and checks.
Can I open a large Google Takeout export?
There is no fixed limit on the archive’s file size. The viewer supports up to 100,000 messages, with a 64 MiB limit per message. Large archives take longer to open and depend on your device; other processing limits apply. Extract the ZIP first, then open the MBOX inside. See the Takeout guide.
How much does it cost?
Opening files, searching and all current downloads are free. No card is required. See pricing and what’s included.
